  1. Bilingual Storytime: How Hollyhocks Came to New Mexico, with Siah Hemphill and Javier Salas

    November 29, 2020, 7:00 PM @

State Senator-elect Siah Correa Hemphill will read this colorful New Mexico tale in English, and Grant County Commissioner Javier Salas will read it in Spanish. Late great New Mexican author Rudolfo Anaya weaves a fabulous fable about the colorful flowers that grow along walls in the Southwest. Escaping Herod's wrath, Sueño, a near-sighted angel, takes the Holy Family to New Mexico by mistake. The story blends history and legend to show how different cultures can cooperate and respect the land. A message most welcome from our elected representatives! Javier “Harvey” Salas is the Grant County Commissioner for District 2. He was born in Santa Rita, NM. He had a career in the army and graduated from WNMU with multiple degrees. Siah has been a teacher, a school psychologist and as a director of special education. She was inspired to pursue a career in education and special education by her son Nicholas, who was born with a rare genetic syndrome and has multiple disabilities.
