Breaking News

The Breaking News is that Mosquito Counts are up in Silver City and Grant County.

August 24, 2006
New Mexico reports it's first West Nile Virus case of the year in Dona Ana County.

The Town of Silver City has increased the amount of mosquito traps and is now trapping once a week. Mosquito counts are up and the City continues to treat public waterways and standing water for mosquito larva.

There are many things that you can do on your property to help. Mosquito Dunks are available at local Plant Nurserys. Use them in your standing water. Dunks are safe for use in stock tanks. pet dishes, bird baths and other places around your home that collect water.

Make sure your rain collection barrels are covered with fine wire mesh. Recycle and refresh water in plant trays, bird baths and animal water dishes every 2- 3 days. Make sure that the kiddie pool is drained.

Make sure your window and door screens or repaired. Most mosquito activity is at dusk and dawn. Protect yourself by wearing long sleeves and pants when outside. Mosquitos are attracted to dark colors, so wear light colored clothing.

For more details see 2006 Action Report.

The Breaking News is that Spring has Sprung!

March 2, 2006

It is time to:

• Remove those old tires. They can be recycled at the dump.....without a tire charge! The City bundles them and uses them for erosion control. Old tires provide a MAJOR breeding ground for mosquitoes. Remember............controlling West Nile Virus means controlling the mosquito breeding habitat. Tires provide a perfect breeding ground. Many areas which test positive for the presence of West Nile Virus are around or near old tire dumps.

• Begin Spring Cleaning around Your Yard. Now is good time to begin to clean your yard. Collect up old building materials, trash, bottles and other old discards that could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Not only can you prevent a mosquito breeding ground......you will be making our community look better also.

• Fix all leaky faucets. Clean swamp cooler trays and repair all plumbing leaks.

• Repair your screens on window and doors.

• Cover your water collection barrels with fine wire mess to keep mosquitos out.

• Now is the time to vaccinate your Horses. Talk to your vet about getting your horses vaccinated. The vaccine is safe for horses, including pregnant mares. It takes about 6 weeks for your horse to develop an immunity. Talk to your vet today.
