Vector Control Task Force Update August 5, 2004The Rains are Finally Here........Maybe In Mid March the Town of Silver City began actively larviciding to reduce the populations of mosquito larva in our area. In mid May we began trapping adult mosquitos in conjunction with the State Lab. To date, our adult mosquito populations remain low and test results from the State Lab remain negative for the presence of West Nile Virus. Sign up Now (August 5, 2004) to be on the NO SPRAY LIST by calling the Mosquito Hotline at 534-6363. If "spot" spraying should become necessary in the Silver City Area because of the presence of West Nile Virus your property will be excluded. "Public Notification of Spraying", should it become necessary, will occur 72 hours before spraying will occur. Locations and times will be posted in the Legal section of local newspapers, the Mosquito Hotline, the Web Page, local list serves and word of mouth. If you feel that you have a mosquito problem in your area, call the Utilities Department at 534-6365 and leave a message for Eddy. He will conduct a surveillance of your area in order to locate the breeding site of the mosquitos. You may purchase "Mosquito Dunks" at local nurseries and feed stores to apply to your own standing water, stock tanks, stock ponds, ect. Mosquito Dunks are safe for livestock and pets. Keep your stock pens clean.....as mosquitos love to breed in horse and cow dung. Water collection barrels should be covered with fine screening that allows rain water in but keeps mosquitos out. Check your swamp cooler trays, fix all plumbing leaks. Remove old tires, Recycle the water in kids wading pools and bird baths and pet dishes every 4 days. Keep your trash and recycle bins covered or drill holes in the bottom so they can drain. West Nile Virus is a Community Concern |
